Zimbabwean Recording Artist BLACK FIN Brings Feel-Good
African Hip Hop To The World With Debut Mixtape, HOKOYO
New York, NY November 28th, 2014 – When artists like Afrika Bambaataa and A Tribe
Called Quest were embracing Afrocentricity in hip hop’s golden era, they were setting
the stage for Black Fin. With HOKOYO, A new Zimbabwean hip hop producer and MC
reprises classic feel-good music from within the African continent.
Hip hop, A sound birthed from the grit of decaying New York reenergizes through the
sun and struggle of Harare. Borrowing the city’s light as soundtrack, Black Fin creates
an uplifting experience that rises from an insuppressible need for human expression.
Placing sonically among artists such as Gangstarr, Digable Planets and MF Doom, Black
Fin’s songs are both rife with urgency and committed to undeniable good vibes. Punctuated by clever samples and his native Shona dialogue, Black Fin offers music that
crosses both borders and influences.
Embedded in a dynamic gallery website of digitally-collaged album art, fifteen downloadable songs anchor HOKOYO’s 360 listener experience. The release is coupled with a
PledgeMusic fundraising campaign that aims to fund Black Fin’s first tour. Featuring
campaign-only access to limited edition media spanning cassette to vinyl, hip hop fans
are invited on a musical journey that spans the globe.
