THE ASCLEPIAN VOICE
THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE ORDER OF ASCLEPIUS : WEST VISAYAS STATE UNIVERSITY—COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

APRIL 16, 2015

VOLUME 1 ISSUE NO.9

OA RENDERS SERVICE IN ICES
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
Article by: Louise Cecille S. Del Rosario

T

he Order of Asclepius
exists in accordance to the
greatest Order: Frater,
Medica,
Servia
which
represents brotherhood in Medicine
through Service. This Asclepian spirit
continues to flourish as yet another
medical-surgical mission invitation was
attended to by a number of Asclepians.
The Order of Asclepius was tasked to
man the surgical mission in which they
were faced with another group of
young Filipino boys awaiting their turn
for the customary circumcision.
Iloilo Central Elementary School
(ICES) is currently celebrating its one
hundredth year as an academic
institution. In line with this, the ICES
Alumni Association is holding a series
medical-surgical mission sponsored
by ICES Batch 1981 from April 15-18,
2014. The Order of Asclepius rendered

their services on the first day of the
four-day affair.
The day started with a short
program in which the Asclepian
volunteers and other participants of
the mission were welcomed. Some of
the speakers included Mr. Nerio
Benito E. Eseo, ICES Principal IV; Mr.
Alan A. Zaldivar, President of ICES
Alumni Association; and Dr. Cheryl
Lynn Divinagracia- Nuñez, chairman
of the ICES Alumni Medical
Committee. Dr. Nuñez, head of the
said medical-surgical mission, is an
alumna of the West Visayas State University – College of Medicine (Batch
1993).
The surgical mission was held in
the ICES Library. There were a total
of 54 Filipino boys ranging from 10 to
13 years of age who pre-registered
for the event, of which, only 40 of

which
were
successfully
circumcised. Free pain medication and
antibiotics for the participants were
provided by the sponsors.
The surgical mission was a half day
event. Dr. Nuñez, who has worked
with the Order of Asclepius before,
seemed proud of her choice of
volunteers as she said “When it comes
to circumcision, I do know that
students of WVSU–COM finish the job
fast.”
Mr. Eseo, generously provided
lunch for the sponsors and the
volunteers. As usual, the Asclepian
brothers and sisters feasted with joy
and laughter. “Like this, there should
always be a ‘Frater’ part in every
event.” according to Junior Lady
Asclepian Ma. Celine Villo who led the
team to a successful and fulfilling
mission. #
