THE ASCLEPIAN VOICE
THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE ORDER OF ASCLEPIUS : WEST VISAYAS STATE UNIVERSITY—COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

APRIL 17, 2015

VOLUME 1 ISSUE NO.11

OA GOES TO PANAAD SA NEGROS
Article by: Jayrick Aguirre

P

anaad is the Hiligaynon
term
for
“vow”
or
“promise,” and is also a
name to one of the most
well-known and award winning
festivals in the region—the Panaad sa
Negros Festival. With 13 cities and 19
towns participating in what is known to
be the “mother of all Negrense
festivals,” a flurry of activities and
sights can be experienced in this week
long celebration of life, culture and
bounties in the province. Now with the
last few days of the festival remaining,
the Order has been a part of the
Panaad, participating in the medical
mission and experiencing the festival
firsthand.
Aptly titled as the “Kalusugan
Patrol,”
the
ABS
CBN
News
Department, in partnership with the
Review for Global Opportunities

(RGO) with Dr. Chris Sorongon,
Bantay Bata, Provincial Health Office
(PHO), Bacolod Adventist Medical
Center (BAMC), Central Philippine
Adventist College (CPAC) and the
Order of Asclepius held a medical
and surgical mission last April 16 at
the Panaad stadium in conjunction
with the festival.
Servicing over 98 patients for the
medical mission and 70 patients for
the operation tuli, Kalusugan Patrol
was primarily aimed to provide
medical consultations to the citizens
of
Purok
Tumpok,
Brgy.
Blumentritt in Murcia, a community
situated right next to the garbage
dumpsite in the neighboring Brgy.
Felisa.
“There were recently some fires
in the dumpsite that emanated smoke
into the purok and caused them to

develop respiratory problems,” said
head organizer and ABS-CBN reporter
Mitch Lipa. “This medical mission was
for them to alleviate those health
concerns, in addition to the surgical
mission.”
Ma. Celine Villo, Anne Celle
Sajorne, and Jayrick Aguirre, all from
Batch 37 have manned the consultation
stations in addition to Dr. Chris
Sorongon from Batch 24
and Dr.
Jessica
Gasendo-Fama
from
Batch 7 of the Negros Provincial Health
Office.
The minor sponsors for the said
event were Virginia Food Inc, Pharma,
and
the
Handumanan
Teachers
organization which served as the
pharmacists.
Well-known
local
television news reporters Nico Delfin
and Mark Salangga have co-organized
the event in addition to Lipa.#

How is it possible to tour
t h e
e n ti re p ro vi n ce o f N e gr o s
Occidental in less than three hours?
Batch 37 Asclepians Celine Villo
(current Junior Lady Asclepian),
Anne Celle Sajorne and Jayrick
Aguirre just did. And it was a lot of
fun.
Right after the medical and surgical
mission at the Panaad stadium, the
three Asclepians decided to roam
around and see what this year’s
Panaad Festival has to offer (even
though all three are already from
Negros).
Halfway through the stroll it got
really hot but we have visited 14
pavillions in all from the 30-ish
participating towns and cities. More
destinations await but there’s still the
next day for more touring and visiting
the province’s riches. Alright, we have
o n ly to ure d HALF o f N e gro s
Occidental but for only three hours?
Still worth it.
Three days left before the festival
ends but these three Asclepians have
already tasted more than half of what
this year’s event has to offer. A perfect
mix of frater, medica, and
servia
during this year’s Panaad sa Negros
festival.#
