THE ASCLEPIAN VOICE
THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE ORDER OF ASCLEPIUS : WEST VISAYAS STATE UNIVERSITY—COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

JUNE 3, 2015

VOLUME 1 ISSUE NO.27

Holy Grounds
Service on the
Article by: Jayrick Aguirre

R

ain fell on the church
parking lot as a couple
hundred parents with their
children huddled on the
shaded platform around the polygonal
beige-and-maroon church. It was a
sweltering noon yet rain fell in torrents.
The air was thick with the folks’ almost
palpable anticipation of getting their
children checked, and themselves as
well. At first, the scene was a scattered
mass of people bustling about in the
rain but a few minutes later it became
an entirely new sight.
In line with the Bacolod San
Antonio Abad Parish’ 48th anniversary
as a parish community, the Order of
Asclepius along with Rotaract Club
Bacolod South and Tambal of the
University of St. La Salle College of
Medicine took part in yet another
medical mission dedicated to the
indigent community of the parish last
June 1 at the church site, Lacson St.,
Bacolod City.
Around 250 pediatric and adult

patients
availed
of
the
free
consultation and pharmacy along with
Dr. Chris Sorongon and Dr. Micaela
Temporosa. The medical mission was
organized to address the health
concerns
of
the
surrounding
communities of the parish in the
Mansilingan,
Tangub
and
Magsungay.
Asclepians from Batch 37, Jayrick
Aguirre and Jose Montilla were
present in the event, along with
volunteers from WVSU-COM Class
2017 (Excelsior) namely: Charity
Diane Jocame, Jessa Tiapon, Lovely
Anne Jermeo, Jozelle Grace Justiniani
and Ria Noreen Taganile.
While the consultations were
going on, a short entertainment
program was held by ABS-CBN and
MOR Radio Bacolod at the church
grounds who were also partners in
the event. A mass was held after the
medical mission commemorating the
church’s 48th foundation anniversary
and as a thanksgiving to the

conclusion of the event.
The event was made possible
through the efforts of Orlando
Dogomeo, Parish Coordinator, Basic
Ecclesial Communities, Marilyn Frias
of the Parish Finance Committee,
Leocita Quebrar, President of the
Parish
Pastoral
Council
and
His Very Rev. Fr. Farley Ray Santillan
VF, Parish Priest who also held the
mass.
The sky cleared into a colorless
canvass when the mission was finished.
The grounds were empty but inside the
church, between the pillars sat a throng
of people, eager to hear the mass. The
volunteers were invited inside and were
handed out certificates of recognition as
the folks looked on and clapped
earnestly. The scene may have started
on as a chaotic picture but it ended
in a peaceful note, as the people
sat down and fixed their eyes upon the
gilded
bronze
statue
of
the
risen Christ on the church’s hallowed
altar. #
