On the first day of the month of Elul, the year 5,331 to the Creation, my teacher of blessed memory told me
to fast two successive days, those following the first day of Elul, and that by that I will obtain some
comprehension. The consideration in the fasts is that on the month of Elul thirteen sources open up of the
thirteen corrections of the beard of Atika, and appear and shine below on Aba and Ima, where it surrounds
their brains like we explained at the beginning of the Idra of Ha’azinu outside their brains the light of Aba
and Ima bursts out and shine there as Surrounding Light, where the thirteen corrections of the beard of
Atika appear. First you have to meditate in general that the Samech-Gimel Yud Hei Vav Hei and Eheyeh fully
spelled with Yud’s that is numerically 161 abide throughout the month of Elul.
These are implied in the word Elul (Aleph-Lamed-Vav-Lamed). The two letters El are the three Yud’s and an
Aleph in the Samech-Gimel name, as known, from which the name El derives, as mentioned in the Zohar,
portion Pinchas. The two letters Vav-Lamed are the name El that derives from the three Yud’s and Aleph that
are also 161, as the three Yud’s in it are 30 (Lamed) and instead of Aleph there is the letter Vav, because Aleph

disappears in the Vav-Aleph-Vav. It is called Elul, because throughout the month it is fitting to meditate on
these two names. The two Samech-Gimel and 161 names are numerically derech (pathway, 224), which is the
inner meaning of, “who makes a pathway in the ocean” (Isaiah 43:16). The word bayam (in the ocean) is the
Bet-Nun name fully spelled with Hei’s and the two names equal ‘pathway’ because the Bet-Nun name shines
on them that is numerically ‘in the ocean.’ This pathway is open throughout the month of Elul.

I shall now explain and write down the sequence of creating the unification in brief so you can meditate on
it in your contemplations with your eyes closed when you rise after midnight. Utter with your mouth, with
concentrated thought, “May it be acceptable before You, our Elohim and the Elohim of our father, to
be revealed now through the forehead of the Supernal Will.”

Meditation to Open the Gate of
Mercy & Correction in the Month of Elul (Virgo)
Rav Isaac Luria (the Ari) revealed these meditations as the source of the “13 Attributes of Mercy” or the
“13 Attributes of Atika or Keter” to his student, Rav Chaim Vital. The channels are awakened specifically
during the month of Virgo and these meditations can be used for the entire month.
