New Zealand British
Parliamentary Debating
Championships 2015

Victoria University of Wellington,
November 20-22, 2015

The Tournament:
The New Zealand British Parliamentary Debating Championships (“NZBP”/Vic
IV/The Vice Chancellor’s Cup) was established in 2004 to allow New Zealand and
international debaters to practice and refine their British Parliamentary style
before the World University Debating Championships. The tournament is open to
all speakers, and involves those from Schools, Universities, and proper adult life.

Since 2012, two WUDC Champions and an additional six Grand Finalists have
attended NZBP – a significant number, especially considering how far New
Zealand is considered to be from the major debating circuits.

Chief Adjudicators:

Daniel Wilson

Our first CA this year is Daniel Wilson. In 2014, he was a Worlds
Quarter Finalist, winner of the Plunket Medal, and a Joynt semifinalist. He has made the break of several other tournaments,
including the Melbourne Mini Grand Final: about which he’s probably
told you already. He has judged two ESL Grand-Finals at Austral – a
tournament he convened when it was hosted at Vic. Daniel has been
involved in coaching and administration on a schools level, as
President of the Wellington Speaking Union, and as coach of several
regional teams and the NZ development team.

Udayan Mukherjee

Our second CA this year is Udayan Mukherjee. Udayan is the
winningest speaker at Australs of recent history, winning in both
2010 and 2011. At World, he has made the Quarter Finals and peaked
as the 8th best speaker. Domestically, Udayan has achieved the “Grand
Slam”, winning all three NZ tournament – a feat few have achieved.
This extensive debating experience has been matched by Udayan’s
judging talents, including adjudicating at the Grand Australs Finals
and judging a semi-final at Worlds. Udayan joins Daniel (and many
others) as an independent adjudicator at Worlds this year.

Location: The tournament is held at Victoria University’s Kelburn Campus. A
map of the relevant rooms can be found on the back of this booklet.

Convenors:
Tamara Jenkin: 021 024 95481
Oscar Battel-Wallace: 027 505 1336
Lucy Kenner: 021 024 32316

Food: As part of your registration, we have organized a lunch for you on
Saturday and Sunday, and a tournament dinner on Saturday evening. In addition
to this, we will provide snacks across both days.

Opening Night Drinks: Hotel Bristol (131-133 Cuba St). This bar is VicDebsoc’s
usual Wednesday night, post-debating haunt (and previous NZBP opening night
drinks venue!). It is an excellent chance to catch up with participants in the
tournament, and get into the spirit of the tournament. The bar features a range of
(unsubsidized) beers, ciders, and house spirits.

Saturday Night Dinner: Mint Restaurant (18/24 Allen St). It wouldn’t be a
debating competition without a curry at a BYO restaurant. Something of an
institution for Wellington debating, this oft-renamed restaurant will be serving
up tasty curries and other Indian treats (food. Not one of your CAs). Remember
to bring some delicious and cheap New Zealand wine! Or some gross Yarra
Valley stuff.

Final Night Party: Dakota Restaurant (17 Allen St). The Final Night Party will be
held deep in the Wild West (the region, not the terrible Will Smith Film). There
will be snacks and subsidised drinks (and maybe a mechanical bull if you’re very
lucky). Dakota is always just a wild and fabulously hilarious time, so we hope to
see you all there decked out in your finest attire. Extra points if you steal a hat.
