Dative, synopsis for 2nd draft
The story concerns Sid and Kai, a couple in their late 20s, early 30s, which breaks up before
the main events of the film take place.
Sid and Kai both used to be neuroscientists, working on their respective doctorates, but Kai
could not take the pressure and left the program. One of the main reasons was his natural
talent for psychopharmacology, which became an obsession as he was trying out different
arrays and combinations of medications on himself.
This obssesiveness is what breaks Sid and Kai apart, with Sid being concerned for Kai’s
health as well as lack of ambition after he drops out and finds a job as a graphic designer in
a small fashion and marketing agency. Kai begins to resent Sid for the way she makes him
feel, his emasculation bursting out as anger when he brings Sid lunch to the laboratory one
day.
Sometime after this, Kai, now single, develops a combination of various medications, which
allows him to enter a state, in which he feels like he can consciously travel in time. During
this state, he can observe and actively change his memories. Later he comes up with a plan
to tinker with Sid’s image in his mind to the point where she becomes unreal and thus should
not be able to make him feel guilty about his life choices and their breakup.
He prepares and enters the state again, changing and destroinyg parts of their past.
Because every memory has some version of Sid in it, he uses these various Sids in his
plans as he rewrites their history, discarding the versions of Sid (and himself) he finds unfit
for his new version of events. However, even the “new and improved” Sid tunrs “defective”
and as all of them before, ends up locked in what could be described as conscious coma.
This happens to every version of Sid, as Kai destroys traces of her identity, leaving pretty
husks in his path.
Kai’s “time travelling” either takes several unsuccusefull attempts or happens in stages, as in
the actual world he encounters Sid, who becomes confused with his behaviour and way he
remembers events.. Over time, she starts to follow him and study his behaviour, testing his
memory by approaching him, especially in places connected to their shared past.
As Kai wakes up from his last and succesful mind alteration, he finds traces of previous
preparations for enetering the state, which lead him to believe, that SId is made up, a perfect
woman he wanted to dream up living with. He feels saddened by this, but her loss is now
indicative of an ideal form he can never interact for real and as such, allows him to not feel
actual guilt for ruining their relationship.
We end on Sid and her growing obsession with Kai as an object of study, as she gathers
reserarch notes, snippets of connversations and photos, getting ready for another test of
Kai’s memory at the train station, which is where they originally met. The film ends before
the actual encounter.
Where we basically end up is both of them in a state of unhealthy and harmful obsession
with each other, without being able to enter any normal form of a dialogue. Fun, right?
