The setting

One place (inside the
castle)

Two different places

Globe
On setting, on stage,
Macbeth has
presence.

Other
characters

Kumonoso-Ju

No feelings, he seems
empty inside.

Self confident

Is he crazy ? Angry. A
lot more emotive.
Committed Macbeth.

Not royal clothes but
Samurai clothes. Not
authority: his army won’t
obey him.

He has feelings.
Sometimes he doesn’t
speak his lines, he
thinks them.

He looks sad. He cries.
His voice lowers. It’s
sadder. More human.

He screams! He seems
alone.

Drums, they stop
when we learn the
Queen’s dead.

The sound & music
creates a tragic
atmosphere.

At the Globe, original
Shakespeare theatre.

Not the same text as the
original. The washing of
the scene is at the end,
and the queen doesn’t
die.

Sound

Direction /
Fidelity

PBS

The woods literally move.

Macbeth at
war

Macbeth and
death

1948

The end is changed a
bit. Some things are left
out, and guards speak
when they shouldn’t.
