Driving the future of
education with Nutanix
Australian schools have a healthy appetite for technology; they
understand that technology has the potential to dramatically improve
outcomes for students. Digitisation, the shift to online testing,
increased data access requirements anytime and anywhere, and
the surge in learning applications and videos are presenting more
opportunities than ever before. However, many schools continue to
face challenges at the hands of their legacy IT infrastructures, which
are not adaptable enough to embrace new trends.
Nutanix is a simple solution to this problem. It provides high-quality,
out-of-the-box infrastructure for virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI)
and server virtualisation; it has a single management console for the
entire server and storage infrastructure; it runs mixed workloads; and
its web-scalability lets you grow-as-you-go.
The Nutanix platform enables schools to virtualise sever applications
and traditional desktops to efficiently use infrastructure, provide
consistent and reliable user experiences on a range of devices, and
simplify management for IT administrators – the technology is almost
invisible.

WHAT IS HYPERCONVERGED
INFRASTRUCTURE?
Hyperconverged infrastructure
converges compute, virtualisation
and storage into a single solution
for a simple data centre. It
reduces power and space, and
eliminates storage complexity.
A hyperconverged infrastructure
solution built using a software
model delivers predictable
performance and scalability
and cloud-like infrastructure
consumption.

Nutanix runs all applications out-of-the-box. Whether
it’s VDI, administrative tools, custom education systems
or high-demand software products, Nutanix provides
the flexibility to run multiple applications on a single
infrastructure with a small footprint.
The Nutanix Extreme Computing Platform (XCP) enables
simple and reliable VDI without the high cost, variable
performance and risk of conventional storage area
networks (SANs). Certified for VMware Horizon and Citrix
XenDesktop, it delivers high performance to students and
staff, even in BYOD environments or home sessions.
Nutanix is quick to deploy and easy to manage. The
technology takes 30 minutes to deploy and, once it’s live,
it requires minimal interaction. This means IT departments
can focus on qualitative projects rather than investing
time and resources into keeping the lights on.
The modular building-block design of the Nutanix
platform enables schools to start small and scale as
required, eliminating large up-front costs, and making it
easy to adapt to changing business demands.
The Nutanix XCP is hypervisor agnostic, with the ability
to support Nutanix’s own hypervisor – Acropolis - as well
as Hyper-V and vSphere.
Nutanix provides backup to cloud via Cloud Connect for
an additional layer of protection to ensure systems are
always-on.

Customer Stories
Many K-12 schools and colleges in Australia have
already made the move to Nutanix’s hyperconverged
architecture. The following customer stories provide
an insight into how some of these schools and
colleges have used Nutanix to create even better
student and staff experiences.

- Troy Pieterman, Network Manager, Woodleigh School

“More time has been one of the biggest benefits
for us in the switch to Nutanix. Thanks to the
hyperconverged technology, combined with the
Prism interface, Nutanix is an easy solution to
manage. I’ve found that my time and resources can
now be focused on making the student learning
experience seamless and reliable. We are spending
less time managing complex systems, which allows us
to focus on educating our students on issues such as
cyber security, best practice in technology use and
online citizenship.”

- Tim Pinnock, ICT Manager, Inaburra School

“Nutanix gives us the simplicity and scalability to
deliver high-value applications very quickly. The
technology ensures our critical systems – including
our student management systems, the learning
management system, and active directory – are
running reliably so that teaching and learning aren’t
interrupted. With Nutanix, we have been able to give
students an educational experience with Minecraft,
and look forward to providing high-end applications
like Photoshop to students on their own devices.”

- Daniel Smith, IT Manager, Highview College

“Nutanix provides the performance and reliability
to ensure we can give our students all the tools
they need to improve their education without
interruptions from the technology itself. Because
it’s hyperconverged and very easy to scale, we have
been able to kick-start a project around SEQTA,
which will provide our teachers, students and parents
with a portal that will assist them in their wellbeing
and learning outcomes. It will work side-by-side with
our learning management system to further boost
students’ learning experiences, and give teachers a
much more efficient way to run their classes. That’s
not something we had the capacity to do before.”

- Rob Wilson, IT Manager, Daramalan College

“With Nutanix powering our VDI, students have
access to a standard desktop environment on
whatever device they already own. That means they
can use our writing software, education resources,
and the Microsoft Office suite on familiar technology
in the classroom and at home in order to maximise
their learning outcomes.”
