Polypipe Charity Sailing
Regatta 2016
18th Anniversary Event
Wednesday 7th Sept, Port Solent, Hampshire

REGATTA
2016

a will
The 18th annual Polypipe Charity Sailing Regatt
2016.
be held this year on Wednesday 7th September
You do not need to know how to sail to enter!
All boats come with skippers!
The Regatta is aimed at non-sailors and experienced sailors alike. The intention is for
everyone to experience an enjoyable day on the water with some not too serious racing.
Afterwards, during après sail at Port Solent, there will be a raffle to raise money for some
worthwhile causes. In this Olympic year, the Polypipe Regatta will again support the John
Merricks Sailing Trust. They in turn have supported Dylan Fletcher who represents GB in
the 49er class at Rio. In addition, the Polypipe Regatta will this year support Helena Lucas
in her bid for a repeat Gold in the Paralympic Sailing.
The day is an excellent opportunity for client entertainment. Last year 66 yachts entered.
This year, it would be wonderful to exceed 70 yachts!
The morning of the regatta starts at 7.45 a.m. with breakfast at the Portsmouth Harbour Yacht Club. Competitors then make
their way to the pontoon where their yachts are moored, get kitted up and have a safety briefing on-board. The next hour
and a half is spent learning to sail, remembering how to sail or just practice sailing depending on your abilities! The first race
follows; we then have a break for lunch. A second race then takes place and afterwards the fleet returns to the Yacht Club
for tea, cakes, prize giving, perhaps the odd beer and the charity raffle. The day is finished by 6.00 p.m.
For those arriving the night before, the Yacht Club will be open in the evening with a bar, yachtsmen’s supper and a free
band. Please book up below for the supper. Everyone is encouraged to come and enjoy the band, whether eating or not.
You can enter the regatta as a charterer or as a privateer. All yacht prices for 2016 have been held at 2015 levels!
Charterers buy a complete package from Polypipe which includes yacht, skipper, breakfast, afternoon tea, waterproofs and
regatta entry.

Privateers enter their own yacht or a privately chartered yacht. They organise their own skipper, lunch and waterproofs and
pay a regatta entry fee of £5 per foot. (Boat length, not crew members!) Privateers organise and pay for their own berthing
at Port Solent if required. Yachts require an IRC rating. Contact me if you do not have one. Entering as a privateer gives the
possibility of chartering the yacht of your dreams, either to race or to use as a hospitality vessel. If you intend racing, it is vital
that you have insurance to cover you for this. (See details at bottom of privateer’s form.)

Those chartering from Polypipe can choose from the following:
Either – a 40ft Cruiser-Racer. These are all easy to sail yachts with huge cockpits, wheel steering and racy looks. Race with
1 skipper, 1 mate and up to 10 crew. The exact yacht you get is drawn out of a hat. Most teams go for one of these and a
large fleet is available.
Or – a 37ft Cruiser-Racer. Similar to the above but race with 1 skipper and up to 7 crew. Still a lot of fun but a more
economic alternative.
Or – a Pilot Cutter. Pilot cutters were state of the art sailing vessels used in the 19th century to brave the Atlantic and
provide safe pilotage to large merchant ships returning to the UK. They competitively raced to these ships to win their work
and pilotage fees. This fleet comprises modern and original examples. Tiller steered with lots of string and lots of sails. Great
fun. Most race with 1 skipper, 1 mate and up to 12 crew.
Or – Something Else. If you would like something special, maybe a larger yacht or perhaps a classic or historic yacht please
ask. I have access to some very special craft including Sir Francis Chichester’s Gipsy Moth IV.
The handicap system used for racing ensures that all yachts have an equal chance of winning. In order to keep costs down,
I am chartering yachts without food or drink on them. I will still provide breakfast and also afternoon tea and cakes. You are
welcome to bring your own food and/or drinks for lunch aboard your yacht. If you do want me to supply a lunch package for
your yacht please order it below. Please be sensible with any alcohol you bring aboard – there will be a lovely bar open in the
Yacht Club for après sail!
Yachts in the regatta are identified with spray dodgers bearing the team’s logo. All entrants are required to have these.
If you need spray dodgers, contact details are below. Previous entrants will have put their spray dodgers in a safe place and
will now need to find them. Don’t forget them!
We have always had a number of all-female teams entering. It would be good to see more teams competing for the ladies
prize this year.
Important! Buy your raffle tickets in advance and receive a 2016 regatta pennant to fly during the regatta.
As always I have booked sunny weather so remember your shorts and shades!
I am grateful to Sunsail for their assistance with the administration of this regatta, for the organisation of the racing and
donation of raffle prizes. In addition, this year Sunsail have offered special prices on Hull Branding to really show off your
company logo. Zoe Harmer from Sunsail is the contact for hull branding and general regatta enquiries. (02392 222 221)

Happy sailing!

Sponsorship Options
Silver Sponsors
A flag measuring 2m x 1m and bearing the sponsor’s logo will be manufactured for each silver sponsor and will be displayed
in the event marquee in a prominent position. After the regatta the flag will become the property of the sponsor. They may
wish to fly it as a battle flag on their yacht in the next Polypipe Regatta ! Alternatively, if they already have a flag from a previous sponsorship they can send it along to Steve Upson and pay only £100 for the Silver Sponsorship!
Silver sponsorship is available at a cost of £250 plus VAT.
These flags are of the highest quality. By buying in bulk and twisting arms I am able to make a profit from the £250 and the
entire proceeds of this will go to the Regatta charities.
Gold Sponsors
I need 4 sponsors who will sponsor our raffle prizes. Gold sponsors will have their name on the raffle tickets. I will provide FOC a
flag as above and these will be displayed in the most prominent positions. Gold sponsorship is available at a cost of £600 plus VAT.
Band Sponsor
A sponsor for the Tuesday night entertainment is needed. The band from last year were very well received and the sponsor
got a star billing! Band Sponsorship is £1000 plus VAT.
Item Sponsor
If you would like to supply any items for the goodie bags please contact Steve or Becky. There will be around 70 entrants and
700 sailors. Ideas would be 70 large bars of chocolate (Cadburys Fruit and Nut is my favorite!). Rubber band a “With Compliments” slip to each. OR 70 packets of ginger biscuits would be appreciated (Good to ward off seasickness). OR Baseball hats,
memory sticks, sunglass holders or anything else that could be suitable. A good chance to get your name across. Please make
a donation to our charity fund if you wish to be an item sponsor.
