Arnaud Scherpereel is Professor of Respiratory Medicine. He is the Head of the Pulmonary
Department and of the Federation of Thoracic Oncology at the Hospital of the University
(CHRU) of Lille North of France.
He graduated in Medicine from the University of Lille in 1999. He passed his specialization
in Respiratory Diseases in 2001 and in Allergy and Clinical Immunology in 2002 at the
University of Lille. He had also a national training in Thoracic Oncology (GOLF courses) and
in Palliative Care (DU Lille University 2010).
Starting during his PhD training, he was a Research Fellow in the Department of Respiratory
Diseases and in the Institute for Environmental Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania
(PENN) in Philadelphia (USA) from 1999-2000 then in 2002, 2005 and 2007. He is Research
Senior in the INSERM 1019 research unit of the Pasteur Institute of Lille for 10 years.
Pr Scherpereel is the elected Secretary of the Thoracic Oncology Assembly of the European
Respiratory Society (ERS) for 2 years. He was previously the elected Chair of the Pleural and
Mediastinal Tumors Group of the TOA of the ERS for 3 years, and the Chair of the 20082009 ERS/ESTS Taskforce to establish guidelines for the management of malignant
mesothelioma. Since 2008 he has been one of the Associate Editors of the Revue Française
des Maladies Respiratoires, and he is a reviewer for many top-ranked international journals.
He coordinates the French National Network for the management of Malignant Pleural
Mesothelioma (“Mesoclin”), and the multi-centric research team working on Lung Cancer
and MPM at the Hospital of the University of Lille. He belongs to the Scientific Boards of the
French Intergroup of Thoracic Oncology (IFCT), the International Mesothelioma Interest
Group (IMIG) and the European Lung Cancer Working Party (ELCWP).
Pr Scherpereel is (co)author of 99 original publications in peer-reviewed journals, a majority
in leading internationally-known publications, and 7 book chapters. He has presented more
than 60 communications in international meetings and be co-author of 80 others.
