Cohen, R. 2000. The incredible vagueness of
being BriPsh/English. Interna'onal Affairs 76
(3): 575-‐582.

CollecPve idenPty is important (1) to protect
minoriPes and improve their self-‐image, (2) to
help the majority define itself in terms of
excluding others, and (3) to promote
coherence between a people and where they
live.

Britons do not have a strong naPonal
idenPty, in part because BriPshness is
o]en used synonymously with
Englishness. Eighty percent of Britons are
English, and they borrow much from the
Welsh, Sco_sh, and Irish

The BriPsh Empire is one strong component of
being BriPsh/English. It has been observed that
the problem with the English is that their
history happened overseas and they don’t
know what it means.

GlobalizaPon is challenging the concept of
naPon-‐states, which depend on taxing their
ciPzens, etc. However, there has been a loss of
sovereignty that adversely affects popular
noPons of naPonal unity.

Some fear that the UK might fragment like the
Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc naPons in an
aeempt to restore ciPzens’ trust in
government

The UK has undergone many poliPcal
configuraPons, none of which has been
especially generous toward the Northern Irish,
whose territory is included in the UK due to
BriPsh loyalists who colonized it. The Irish
quesPon is a source of indifference or
embarrassment for most English.
HIN 4312-‐15 Cultura Británica, Dr. Jason Kendall Moore, Universidad de Playa Ancha, Campus San Felipe, Segundo Semester 2013
Though the UK is an EU member, most Britons
share an unfriendly a_tude toward mainland
Europeans: the French are perceived as
untrustworthy, the Germans as former
enemies who are now at economic war with
everyone else. Other percepPons are as
follows: Spaniards are sinister, Italians
excitable, Greeks impoverished, Irish vengeful.
The BriPsh have a very us/them perspecPve of
Europe.

Stereotypes are that English are generous,
honest, taciturn, tolerant, eccentric, brave, bad
loves, decent, good losers, trustworthy. They
have an ironic sense of humor, charming
manners, a sense of fair play, and sense of
stoicism.
