Kumar, K. 2000. NaLon and empire: English
and BriLsh naLonal idenLty in comparaLve
perspecLve. Theory and Society 29 (5):
575-‐608.

Hegel on enLLes revealing themselves truly only at the Lme of
their dissoluLon. Applicability to Britain, for only aWer its empire
has “serious aYenLon turned to [its] character.” Despite many
excellent forms of BriLsh history, there has been liYle aYenLon
paid to the nature of character of the UK.

There are far more books on
what it means to be Scoash
or Irish than what it means
to be English. One of
England’s naLonal self-‐
percepLons is that it is
different from other
naLons, especially in that it
is not naLonalisLc. However
this is a maYer of self-‐
congratulaLon.

The English have tended to view naLonalism as
“a kind of pathology, an all-‐consuming sickness
of the individual and naLonal mind—in George
Orwell’s words, ‘power-‐hunger tempered by
self-‐decepLon.’” The English form of
naLonalism can be described as atypical or
non-‐naLonal naLonalism. That said, it is “the
naLonalism of an imperial state—one that
carries the stamp of its imperial past even
when the empire has gone. One might call this
an ‘imperial naLonalism.’”
HIN 4312-‐15 Cultura Británica, Dr. Jason Kendall Moore, Universidad de Playa Ancha, Campus San Felipe, Segundo Semester 2013
The whole issue of naLonalism has only
recently concerned the BriLsh/English since
unLl recently they were too occupied with
their Empire. Now they have to construct a
naLonalism more like that of other countries.
HIN 4312-‐15 Cultura Británica, Dr. Jason Kendall Moore, Universidad de Playa Ancha, Campus San Felipe, Segundo Semester 2013
Classic naLonalism requires the state
(government) and naLon (people) to be one,
as a naLon-‐state, though most naLon-‐states
contain more than one naLon. Compared to
some other countries, BriLsh naLonalism has
more ethnic pluralism.
HIN 4312-‐15 Cultura Británica, Dr. Jason Kendall Moore, Universidad de Playa Ancha, Campus San Felipe, Segundo Semester 2013
NaLonalism has also been a prime moLvaLon for
empire. The other most important factor is war. The
BriLsh/English form of naLonalism is both
missionary and imperial. That is, those people felt
they had the poliLcal, cultural or religious duty to
spread their system via Empire.
HIN 4312-‐15 Cultura Británica, Dr. Jason Kendall Moore, Universidad de Playa Ancha, Campus San Felipe, Segundo Semester 2013
“The English were an imperial naLon in a
double sense. They created a land empire,
Great Britain or the United Kingdome, formed
by the expansion of England from its posiLon
in… ‘the East AtlanLc archipelago’.” Just aWer
WWI that empire covered one fiWh of the
world’s surface and one quarter of its
populaLon.
HIN 4312-‐15 Cultura Británica, Dr. Jason Kendall Moore, Universidad de Playa Ancha, Campus San Felipe, Segundo Semester 2013
From the earliest incarnaLon of the UK,
emphasis was to think of ciLzens as Britons
rather than English, Welsh, or Scots. (The Irish
were always a separate issue.) The separate
idenLLes persisted but the use of the term
BriLsh gained widespread usage.
