Unsafe
A married couple gets locked in their safe room and it forces
them to face some unsafe realities.

INT. SAFE ROOM IN A HOUSE - DAY
 
A carpeted 10x10 room. There's a recliner and a simple sink
and cabinet set up. A computer that's not hooked up is on
the floor.
 
ELENA
What did they say? Are they on
their way?
 
SCOTT
They're on their way. It's going
to take some time though. The guy 
won't be here before three at the
earliest. The guy is coming from
Wichita. Plus it's the weekend, so
fewer service people, bla bla bla.
 
ELENA
Let me see that card.
 
Scott hesitates and then passes her the business card to
the security company. It reads "Blake Williams - Security
Tech".
 
ELENA (CONT'D)
Fuck me.
 
SCOTT
What? Now?!
 
ELENA
No! Not now. I wasn't being
literal, but (sarcastically)
please don't act so excited about
having sex with your wife. I meant
like like "fuck I'm in this shitty
situation". I have a million
things to do today. This was not
the plan.
 
Beat. Silence.
 
ELENA (CONT'D)
Can I see your phone? I have to
text your Mom and and let her know
not to come over with upholstery
selections. I guess that's one
bonus to being locked in here.
 
SCOTT
Where's yours?

ELENA
I left it upstairs. I didn't think
I'd be spending the rest of the
day down here. You told me this
was going to be a quick test
Scott.
SCOTT
Okay. I'm sorry. Obviously there
are a few kinks to work out. I'll
text her. Look. See? I'm helping.
I'm being helpful.

 
Scott texts his Mom.
 
ELENA
Well it would be helpful if you
could figure out how to get out of
this fucking room. That would be
helpful.
 
SCOTT
I'm sorry! Do you think I want to
be trapped down here? I also had
things to do today.
 
Scott stars rummaging through cabinets in the room.
 
SCOTT (CONT'D)
I wanted to go to the gym and then
was supposed to go over to my
parents to help them decorate the
new gazebo for my Dad's birthday.
 
Elena laughs.
 
ELENA
Oh my god. New gazebo? Is this why
we left New York? To help your
parents with their new gazebo and
to please your control-freak mom
by letting her decorate our house?
 
Scott finds the bottle of wine he left stored in there.
 
SCOTT
No Elena, we left because you were
tired of acting and we wanted to
start a family in an easier, nicer
place. Have a backyard, a garage  
ELENA
- Don't forget a safe room.

SCOTT
The safe room is for the storms.
You know that. It's not a dream to
have a safe room. Being stuck in
here is not the dream.
ELENA
Being stuck in here or being stuck
in here with me is not the dream?
(beat) Are you going to open that
or what? You remembered to stock
this room with wine, but haven't
set up the computer. Priorities.

 
Scott opens the bottle. He swigs. He passes it to Elena.
She swigs.
 
ELENA (CONT'D)
Fuck it. This day is ruined
anyway.
 
SCOTT
What do you want from me Elena?
You're up my ass. I'm doing
everything you want me to do. It's
never enough for you.
 
ELENA
Because you've been distant.
You're detached. You're going
through the motions. I can feel
something is different.
 
Scott drinks and passes bottle to Elena.
 
SCOTT
It's just this move. The new job
and being back in my hometown.
Everyone always needs something
from me.
 
ELENA
Well I'm so sorry for you Scott.
You have everyone here. You have
an entire support system here. I
have you. That's it.
 
Elena pauses.
 
ELENA (CONT'D)
Where were you on Thursday night?
 
SCOTT
What do you mean? I was at the gym
like I told you.

ELENA
No you weren't or at least you
weren't there when you told me
you'd be there. I stopped in at
six thirty hoping to surprise you
because you've been on my case
about joining places to meet new
friends. I checked everywhere and
you weren't there. At first I
thought maybe you were taking a
class so I checked all the rooms
and even waited outside the spin
room like an idiot for a half hour
because it was so dark in there I
couldn't see in. I thought for
sure you were in there, but you
weren't. Then I called your phone
and you didn't answer. You didn't
get back until late. You said you
were tired and had to shower and
then went right to bed. Where were
you?
SCOTT
Look, I was at the gym earlier. I
was there, but then afterward I
went for a beer by myself. I'm
sorry I didn't tell you. I just
wanted to be alone for a bit. Like
I said, I'm stressed with this
move and the new practice. It's
not easy starting over and coming
back home. In some ways I feel
like a failure. It's not you, I
just wanted some alone time. I'm
sorry for not telling you.

 
Scott's phone rings. They stare at each other.
 
ELENA
Who is it?
 
SCOTT
It's Blake. The guy from Security
Tech. (Answers) Hi Blake. How are
you?
 
Scott turns down the volume on his phone.
 
BLAKE (V.O.)
Hey. How's it going down there?
Everything ok?

SCOTT
Yeah. We're still here. Safe in
the safe room, waiting for your
guy to get here.
BLAKE (V.O.)
Listen I know you can't talk
because she's right next to you.
I'm only calling to tell you that
I'm disappointed I won't get to
see you later. I was really
looking forward to it. You're all
I've been thinking about.
SCOTT
Glad to know someone will be here
soon. Thanks for checking in. I'll
call back if we have any more
problems.
BLAKE (V.O.)
Let me know if you can get away
later on. I'll be around all
night. Call me when you can. I
love you.
SCOTT
OK. Thanks for the call. Take
care.
ELENA
What'd he say?
What?

SCOTT

ELENA
What did he say?
SCOTT
He wanted to see if his guy got
here yet. He was checking in to
see if we're okay.
ELENA
Well thanks for the concern Blake.
