Slay on Words Press Release

Slay on Words is a poetry slam featuring fifteen students from the University of York. In three
minutes each, students will battle it out to represent UoY at the YorkSLAM in Easter 2017.
Six randomly selected judges from the audience will decide who will compete against York
St John and ‘the locals’. The guest poet of the night will be spoken word poet and co-founder
of SayOwtSlam, Henry Raby, whose magical poetry captures a world of dinosaurs, punk and
politics.
The event will be hosted by Samra Mayanja and is brought to you by The Northern Youth,
an events committee comprised of young people living and studying in York. We are an offshoot of the University of York’s arts, fashion and culture publication HARD Magazine and
aim to uncover, cultivate and exhibit the artistic talent found in the North of England.
Our goal as a committee is to confront and consider the overlooked issues surrounding
mental health. In keeping with our previous events, Slay on Words will provide a platform to
students in the north of England to branch out beyond the increasingly London-centric
creative industries and express themselves on both creative and mental health fronts. In
addition to this we aim to promote local artists under the backdrop of an interesting and
thought-provoking event.
Slay on Words will take place on Saturday the 19th November at 7pm, where the poets will
perform in two competitive rounds followed by a DJ set to round off the evening. The location
of the event is Orillo Studios, YO10 5AP.
Further details of the event can be found on the facebook page:

We are still looking for poets, for those interested please contact samramayanja@gmail.com
