In this season of giving, we know there are a lot of important causes and groups to support.
With a gift to the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena, you can make an investment in the lives
of your neighbors and their children. Your contribution will be put to work in making
the future bright for our members.
Let me tell you a little bit about Steven. He started coming to the Club when he was just 10
years old, back in the fall of 2009. Even then, he was on the wrong track. He had failing
grades and no interest in school. Kids in his neighborhood, those just a few years older,
were already getting in serious trouble. Steven’s two older brothers, both several years
older, were already on their way out of the home leaving only his single mom to keep him
safe and out of trouble. Working two jobs, she felt she had few places to turn to for support.
Fortunately she had learned about the Club.
We say that “the Boys & Girls Club works” because of members like Steven. Today,
he’s a high school junior back on the right track. The always-angry ten year-old who would
run out our doors with a staff member right behind has been replaced with a young man
who comes straight from school, often before we open, and waits patiently to start his day at
the Club.
He helps out our younger members and became a mentor to a member with special needs.
His grades are now Bs and Cs and after high school he wants to enroll at Pasadena City
College, preparing for a university like UCLA. He first visited the UCLA campus for the
annual Boys & Girls Clubs Teen Summit. Last month he got his first part-time job and is
eager to start putting his Money Matters (a program he goes to at the Club) training to
work!

Why does he come to the Club? “If I didn’t things would be a lot different. I’d be doing a
lot worse in school because I wouldn’t be motivated. The Club taught me accountability and
respect. If I wasn’t here, I’d be getting into trouble.” He’s not exaggerating. A few weeks
ago he headed straight to the Club after school. A few classmates don’t come to the club;
those kids broke into a house. Steven was here, plowing through his homework. The Boys
& Girls Club works!
But it works only because of the generosity and support of friends like you. Please join us
with an important donation, an investment in the future of Steven and his friends at the
Club. A gift of any amount has a big impact on the lives the boys and girls at the Club,
and spending a few moments with a young man like Steven demonstrates why.

We’ve changed “Steven’s” name to respect his anonymity, but “Steven” is a very real
young man. There are 2,500 young people just like “Steven” who rely on the Boys & Girls
Club of Pasadena and you!
