The Anglo-Thai Society is delighted to present the Educational Awards for Excellence 2017 to Thai students studying
in the UK. Its aim is to recognise the exceptional academic achievements of Thai post-graduate scholars in the UK.
The ATS invites all those who feel they might qualify for an award to apply as detailed below:

The Anglo-Thai Society Educational Award Categories:

The winner of each category will receive a plaque engraved with their name and a cheque for £300 donated
by generous sponsors of the scheme, including H.E. the Ambassador of Thailand. Other prizes and diplomas will
also be awarded for recognition in each field.

Criteria for the Awards:
The annual Awards are for Thai PhD students in the in the UK who have a record of outstanding performance
during their time of study here. The judges will consist of a panel of distinguished academics who will take into
consideration the contribution this research makes to the Thai nation and the world in general. To be considered
for the shortlist, candidates should submit the following:
Brief CV plus photograph.
Completed Application Form
A copy of your passport
Letter of support from your academic supervisor or tutor.
A Statement of Achievement with an abstract of your thesis (e.g. publications, conferences and other
outstanding work/experience during the last 3 years of research in the UK). No more than 2 A4 pages

Please note the deadline for applications is 30 June 2017. Winners will be announced by 12 October 2017.
The Awards Ceremony & Reception will be held at The Oriental Club, Stratford Place, London, W1C 1ES
on Friday 14 November 2017, 18.30 - 20.30. Winning candidates will be expected to attend the ceremony.

Introduction
Since 1910, Samaggi Samagom (Thai Association in the UK under Royal Patronage) has dedicated to support and unite Thai students in the UK through academic and social events.
The main academic event of the Association is Samaggi Academic Conference (SAC),
which will now mark its 9th year anniversary. The conference serves as a stage for Thai
students who share common research interests, but may come from different training
backgrounds. The theme of this year is

“Driving Thailand and ASEAN through Innovation”

Objectives
1.

To recognise and appreciate the academic contributions of Thai students in the UK.

2.

To provide a platform for academic, cultural and interdisciplinary exchange, and encourage
community building between Thai students of all disciplines,

3.

To develop and nurture academic networks and partnerships between students of different
academic and social backgrounds for the benefit of Thai communities and society at large.

4.

To raise awareness among Thai students in the UK on climate change.

Keynote
K. Korn Chatikavanij obtained his Bachelor Degree in Philosophy Politics and Economics (Second
Class Honor), Oxford University, United Kingdom after attending Winchester College. He worked in
asset management at SG Warburg, London, while he was a student and joined the firm shortly after
graduation. In 1985, he left Warburg and returned to Thailand, founding a brokerage investment bank
in a joint venture with Hong Kong-based Jardine Fleming Securities Limited, also known as JF
Thanakom.
In 1999, JF Thanakom was sold to JP Morgan and Minister Korn stayed on to serve as President till
2004, when he left JP Morgan to run for the government’s office. Subsequently, he was appointed
Democrat Party’s Deputy Secretary General and Secretary for Economic Affairs and played a role in
examining then Prime Minister Thaksin Shinwatra government's economic policies.

He was appointed as the Cabinet’s Finance Minister in December 2008, K. Korn significantly
contributed to driving the Thai economy out of recession leading multiple stimulus packages and
economic recovery strategies in the Abhisit Government.

After his role as Finance Minister, K. Korn has been leading the Thai Fintech scene serving as the
Chairman of the Thai Fintech Club and leading multiple Fintech programs and initiatives

Panelists:
Huang co-founded Ardent Capital-backed WhatsNew, Thailand’s rising
ecommerce

conglomerate.

Having

spent

the

last

10

years

in

ecommerce, Huang is very knowledgeable about this space. With her
at the helm, WhatsNew grew from a small business to a regional one,
scaled

from

one

vertical

to

a

portfolio,

which

now

includes

brands Petloft, Venbi, Sanoga, and Lafema. She helped increase
revenue growth from a few thousands of dollars for the first few
months after the company’s launch to US$2 million annually. However,
Huang has moved on from WhatsNew to focus on being a mom and
become principal consultant of Buzzebees, which specializes in
building mobile technology with an emphasis on consumer loyalty. As
for WhatsNew, it recently announced the acquisition of lifestylefocused MOXY, its fifth ecommerce store. It continues to aim to build
the female economy and be number one in categories it is in.
Before starting her own business, Mimee had direct experience in
product & marketing for more than 12 years with Truemove, Atos
Origin and Total Access Communication (DTAC). Currently she is also
the partner as Marketing Director of Computerlogy Co. Ltd., a software company focusing on Social Media Marketing and Big Data.
Her areas of expertise are: Tech Startup/Tech Entrepreneur; Tech
project development; Digital Marketing & Big Data Analysis. She
graduated from King Mongkut Institute of Technology Ladkrabang
(KMITL) in Telecommunication Engineering and holds a master degree
in Information Technology Management.
Ponk is qualified architect with 6 years of experience in architecture
design ranging from residential, commercial to institutional projects.
She also runs her own restaurant chain, HAP de NOUS, in Bangkok,
Thailand. During her master study at University College London (UCL),
she also cofounded ChaTale, an online fine tea subscription service in
which she takes responsibilities in creative direction and extensive
product development for ChaTale. The business won UCL Bright Ideas
Award, China-UK Enterpreneurial Challenge, and UCL Advances Idea
Accelerator Competition. Until recently, she has been developing ARCHiTRACKER, a mapping app to help architecture lovers discover the
most interesting architectures nearby and experience cities from the
new perspective.

Panelists:
Dr Jens Lottner is the Chief Transformation Officer at
Siam Commercial Bank. He is responsible for Transformation

function,

running

large

scale

transformation

programs as well as digital initiatives.
Prior to joining Siam Commercial Bank he was a Senior
Partner with McKinsey & Company and The Boston Consulting Group in Singapore, running their respective Financial Services Practice in South-East Asia.
Jens holds a doctorate in Economics from the Technical
University Dresden, Germany, and obtained a Diploma in
Economics

from

the

Rheinische

Friedrich-Wilhelms-

Universitat Bonn, Germany

Dr. Christian Roland is First Executive Vice President and
Head of Transformation of the Siam Commercial Bank. He
was also former Partner at McKinsey & Company from
2002 to 2015. Dr Roland holds a doctorate and DiplomKaufmann (MBA equivalent), Business Administration from
EBS Universität für Wirtschaft und Recht
