Saeed (not his real name) is a stateless asylum seeker currently being
held in Villawood Immigration Detention Centre. His asylum claim was
rejected on a technicality despite his brother gaining refugee status
after lodging an almost identical claim. Saeed was refused the right to
appeal in the Federal Court due to missing a deadline that he was not
made aware of because he does not speak English. Saeed now faces
imminent deportation to danger and potential torture and death in his
country of origin.
Saeed has now been on hunger strike for weeks to protest his unfair
treatment. He was sedated and forcefed through a tube in a Melbourne
hospital, before being handcuffed, kidnapped and driven through the
night with no notice given to him or his lawyer, to Villawood in Sydney.
Since March 21, a 24/7 direct action campaign has been sustained
outside the gates of Broadmeadows and then Villawood Detention
Centre. We have kept watch, held vigils, had discussions and teach-ins,
painted banners, held a concert and protested outside the detention
centre, as well as checking cars leaving the centres for Saeed.
Over the last few weeks there have also been occupations of and
protests outside MPs' offices and immigration departments in
Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide, Hobart and Perth.

Our ask is simpl
At a bare minimum, we demand that Saeed has full access to his
lawyer, that Saeed is given the right to appeal in the Federal Court,
and for the minister for immigration to listen to Saeed’s full story.

6 ways to help

1

Take a photo of yourself holding a sign saying #freesaeed and/or
#stopdeportations and share on social media. Do this by yourself, with
family or friends, in your workplace or place of study. Leave your sign
somewhere public for others to see!

2

Call Peter Dutton's offices (02) 6277 7860 / (07) 3205 9977 and
Malcolm Turnbull's offices (02) 6277 7700 / (02) 9327 3988 to urge
them to grant Saeed his right to appeal.

3

Print some of our flyers and hold a stall at a train station, your
university, or any other public place to chat to members of the public
about what is being done to vulnerable people in their name.

4

Screen the short video that has been made about this campaign - at
your workplace, place of study or just show it to your family and
friends.

5

Call and tweet at Qantas and Emirates - the most likely airlines that will
be used to deport Saeed - to let them know you will never fly with them
again if they are complicit in the injustice of deportations to danger.

6

Get creative - engage in any other action you can think of to raise
awareness of this issue and put pressure on Dutton and Turnbull to do
the right thing, and to create any media possible about the issue.
