Vice President, Biological Systems Research
Manuel was appointed Philip Morris International Inc.’s Vice President, Biological Systems 
Research, in January 2010.
He joined Philip Morris International in 2008 as Director, Research & Development, 
Computational Sciences and Bioinformatics. Before joining the firm, Manuel was Global Head 
of Systems Biology, and Global Head of Informatics and Knowledge Management at Novartis, 
where he served since 2001. From 1994 to 2000, he held several positions at GlaxoSmithKline. 
He began his career in science at the National Cancer Institute in Frederick, MD. 
He received a B.A. in Biology, an M.S. in Physical Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from 
the University of Lausanne, Switzerland.
Manuel is a co‐founder and chairman of the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, Adjunct 
Professor of Bioinformatics at the University of Basel, scientific advisor to several academic 
and commercial entities and a ComputerWorld Honors laureate.
