Jazz Instrumental

Explore-A-Story
This program helps young storytellers in grades 1-4 deepen their understanding of story structure
and character development as they work together to write and perform their own tales. The residency
concludes with a presentation of their work in an Arts Jam! performance at the school. Fulfills NJ Core
Curriculum Content Standards in language arts, social studies and theater.

This residency immerses students in grades 6-12 in the history and language of jazz. Professional
musicians collaborate with music educators to present fun, interactive lessons that strengthen
students’ performance and improvisation skills while deepening their knowledge of this uniquely
American art form. The residency concludes with an Arts Jam! performance at the school.

$825 for one-week program • $2,200 for eight-week program • $2,750 for ten-week program

Devised Theater

Vocal Music

In this residency, students in grades 5-12 hone their acting, playwriting and cooperation skills as they
create an original theater piece. The end result is performed at the conclusion of the residency in an Arts
Jam! performance at the school. Fulfills NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards in language arts, social
studies and theater.

Young vocalists in grades 6–12 will explore the potential of their
voices and develop skills that are essential to being a professional singer, including proper breathing and
air support, posture, range extension and tone quality. This residency concludes with an
Arts Jam! performance at the school.

Poetic Justice
Early Learning Through the Arts ©: New Jersey Wolf Trap Program
Pre-K and Kindergarten classrooms are transformed with performing arts experiences that inspire
new ways of thinking and learning. NJPAC teaching artists work directly with teachers and students
to weave music, movement and drama into daily curriculum, including literacy or STEM lessons, with
custom approaches tailored to each classroom’s needs.
$825 for one-week program • $2,200 for seven-week program

Mercer Musical Theater Program
Students create their own musical by learning the history of the genre and how to bring their original
piece alive through performance. Middle school students from schools in the Greater Newark-area will
be chosen to participate. The 10-week program is led by seasoned teaching artists who bring a wealth
of knowledge and performance experience into the classroom. The program ends with a culminating
performance of all participating students at NJPAC.
There is no fee to participate in the program.
Application Deadline: December 9, 2016

Disney Musicals in Schools
Disney Musicals in School helps to keep the arts in schools and utilizes the unique world of musical
theater to build positive relationships among students, faculty, staff, parents and the community. Five
schools in the 2017-18 school year will participate in a 17-week after-school musical theater residency
guided by NJPAC teaching artists who are trained by NJPAC and Disney Theatrical Group. The program
ends with a Student Share Celebration at NJPAC in the winter of 2018.
There is no fee to participate in the program.
Applications for the 2017-18 school year will be available in the spring of 2017.

This residency encourages young people in grades 5-12 to discover their own unique voices by writing
poetry about issues that are important to them and their communities. In addition to developing
writing skills, young poets will learn how to present their work with confidence and style. The students
will perform their poetry in an end-of-residency Arts Jam! presentation at the school. Fulfills NJ Core
Curriculum Content Standards in language arts, social studies and theater.
$825 for one-week program • $2,200 for eight-week program • $2,750 for ten-week program

Musical Theater
Young performers in grades 5–12 work with professional teaching artists and accompanists to develop
creative expression and build the collaborative skills needed to work as an ensemble. They will rehearse
scenes, practice songs and learn dances in preparation for a final performance that’s sure to earn a
standing ovation. The residency concludes with an Arts Jam! performance at the school.
$3,300 for eight-week program • $3,850 for ten-week program

Movement Matters
Students explore concepts such as space, time and energy through creative movement in this residency
geared toward grades 1–3. As they experiment with rhythm, tempo, shapes, levels and more, students
develop locomotive skills and creative expression while learning about math and science. The residency
concludes with an Arts Jam! performance at the school. Fulfills NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards in
science, math, dance and music.
$825 for one-week program • $2,200 for eight-week program • $2,750 for ten-week program

Tap Dance
This high-energy residency for students in grades 3-12 focuses on rhythm tap and strengthens musicality,
improvisation and timing. Professional teaching artists and students will dance their way through the
history of this iconic American art form as they explore the syncopation skills of tap legends from Fred
Astaire to Savion Glover. The residency concludes with an Arts Jam! performance at the school.

Dancing Classrooms™: New Jersey

$3,300 for eight-week program • $3,850 for ten-week program

Students in grades 5 or 8 learn essential life skills – including respect for others, self-confidence and
grace – through the practice of ballroom dance. This residency explores ballroom and social dances
from around the world, including the tango, waltz, swing and more!

Hip Hop Dance

$2,750 for 10-week program per classroom (must be purchased for full grade).

Colors of the Rainbow Team Match
Fifth-grade students who take part in the Dancing Classrooms™ program have the option of
participating in the Colors of the Rainbow Team Match. Six ladies and six gentlemen from each class
are selected to represent their school in pursuit of the Grand Finale Trophy at NJPAC’s Victoria Theater
in late spring. Space is limited.
$200 entrance fee

Students in grades 6–12 explore the roots of an art form that has inspired generations of young people
and transformed the landscape of American culture. By focusing on various elements of hip hop—
including breakdance, MC’ing, DJ’ing, graffiti and popping—students will gain an understanding of how
young people created a movement that changed the world. The residency concludes with an Arts Jam!
performance at the school.
