Our First Official
Week!

GW 4 Grade
Newsletter
Welcome KIPP fourth grade families to our weekly newsletter. It is my
goal to update you on our happenings in class and important
academic and social skills that our students are working on. Read on
to find out what we have been up to this first full week of school!

Reader’s Workshop
Has your student been reading over the summer? It shows! In class, we are
already up to 39 minutes of independent reading! Our students are digging into
their independent reading books, practicing good reading habits such as how to
choose the just right books for themselves and how to hold a reading
conversation with a partner.

GW students are at it again! Already up to 39 minutes of independent reading. We are digging
into our new books waiting on a new delivery of fourth grade books that should be here any day!

Our First Official

Fourth Grade Math

Week!

This week in math we have spent time review third grade skills such as rounding
to the nearest tens, hundreds and thousands but have also learned new math
curriculum. We practiced reading, writing, comparing and ordering numbers
through the 1 millionth place value such as 382,489. This can be a really hard
number to say! Just ask your student! Please continue to practice with them!

Homework Reminders
Math
Students have one page of math homework front and back every night. This
homework sheet will review old concepts and include the new concepts and skills
taught that day in class. We grade our homework every day in class and student
scores are recorded. Students that earn 100% accuracy on homework all week
earn free choice time on the computer! After we correct homework students can
ask for help with problems they got wrong and we go over them as a class. The
goal is for every student to be getting 100% every night! It is essential that
students come to school with their homework complete so they know what skills
they need to practice. If homework is incomplete or not turned in, students will
complete before they play at recess.
Literacy
Literacy homework this year is 30 minutes of reading EVERY NIGHT. Students
become better readers by reading, that’s it! Reading is a skill that students can
only improve with if they practice! Students should be recording their book
information (pages read, start time and end time) on their reading log which
should go home with them each night with their independent reading books.
If you have any questions about fourth grade homework or homework policies
please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Reminders!

• School ends at 4:15pm this year. Dismissal is from 4:00pm to 4:15pm. Any students still
at school after 4:15pm will be taken to aftercare. Please just call me or text if you are
running late and if I don’t have a meeting your student can wait with me in the
classroom.
• Every Friday in August is a half day. Dismissal is from 12:30pm to 1:00pm.
