In Celebration of 4th of July, a historic
Real Wedding: Elizabeth Schuyler
and Founding Father Alexander Hamilton
More than just the titular character of Broadway's darling
musical, Alexander Hamilton was one of the most brilliant
legal and financial minds in our nation's history, and played
a major role in it's founding. His wife Elizabeth (lovingly
Eliza or Betsy) was one of our nation's greatest
humanitarians, and founder of the first private orphanage in

New York City. Their wedding
took place on December 14,
1780 at the Schuyler Mansion in
Albany. Their love story lasted
from their meeting in early 1780
to Hamilton's untimely death in
1804. An extremely busy man,
many of Hamilton's abundant
love letters over the years to his
wife still survive: "My heart
overflows with everything for you, that admiration, esteem
and love can inspire. I would this moment give the world to
be near you only to kiss your sweet hand."
