INT. OLDER BOOKSTORE / COFFEE SHOP
 
Gareth and Dave are doing a podcast, talking animatedly.
 
DAVE
George Washington had his own
slaves teeth in his mouth. Thomas
Jefferson was a stoner who screwed
his own slaves and then enslaved
his own children. Benjamin
Franklin drank wine with whores in
France, all on the taxpayers
dollar.
 
GARETH
Sounds like they kinda beat the
system...I mean c'mon..
 
They’re overheard by the owner of the coffeeshop, Old
James, a Morgan Freeman type.
 
OLD JAMES
(in an old creaky voice)
“That’s the tip of the iceberg..
You have no idea how far down the
rabbit hole of American History
goes.”
 
Gareth and Dave look at Old James and then back at each
other.
 
 
DAVE
“Uhh, we’re kind of in the middle
of something here buddy..”
 
GARETH
(In a kind of
Brooklyny/Cockney
accent)
“Whatta ya mean old timer?”
 
 
Old James looks at them for a moment, Gareth is waiting for
an answer, Dave pauses the recorder, sips his coffee
deliberately, clearly perturbed..

OLD JAMES
“Ahh I’ve said too much, you go on
with your radio program, don’t
mind Old James none, I’m just an
old fool.”
DAVE
(mockingly)
“It’s actually a bi-weekly
American History podcast, The
Dollop, you may have heard of it?”
OLD JAMES
“Can’t say that I have, but like I
say, I’m just an old fool, you
don’t pay me no never mind.”
GARETH
(his interest piqued)
“How far down does the rabbit hole
go Old James?"

 
 
Old James gets a mysterious look in his eye and sizes them
up..
 
OLD JAMES
“Well, if you really want to know…
(leans in closer)
Come with me..”
 
 
Dave and Gareth look at each other.
 
 
GARETH
(under his breath to
Dave)
“We’ve got to see what he's got…
Right?”

DAVE
(very irritated)
“We’re right in the middle of the
show and you want to go look at
some, some cockamamie…
OLD JAMES
(Interrupting)
“Oh it’s not cockamamie sirs.
Anything but, I’m afraid.”

 
 
Gareth gets up
 

GARETH
“I’ve got to see what this is all
about.. There’s something about
this guy.. I can’t put my finger
on it..

 
Gareth turns to Old James.
 
GARETH (CONT'D)
Lead the way Mr. James sir, let's
see what you've got!”
 
Gareth gets up to go and he and Old James start walking
when they look back at Dave, who is astonished and annoyed.
He waits a beat and then gets up.
 
DAVE
(annoyed)
“Well, I can’t do the show on my
own, let’s get it over with, I’ve
got to be on set by 6..”
 
 
Old James walks a couple feet, makes a turn and heads down
a deserted row of books. He’s about to pull a book from a
shelf. Right before he does, he looks at the pair.
 
OLD JAMES
“Now, I have to warn you, this
isn’t for the faint of heart.
Where we’re going there are beasts
and monsters and things you can’t
even imagine..”

Dave and Gareth look at eachother - Gareth is eager with
anticipation, looking back and forth eagerly.
 
DAVE
(skeptical)
“Beasts and Monsters..? In a book?
I think I can handle it, I’ve done
4 seasons of Maron..”
 
 
Old James looks at them.
 
OLD JAMES
“Ok, here goes nothing..”
 
And pulls a book.
 
The whole shelf turns, ala Scooby Doo. Dave and Gareth are
astonished, and look at each other, wondering what they’ve
got themselves into..
 
 
INT. DARK STAIRWAY / CELLAR
 
The three of them turn into the other side of the wall and
walk down a spiral staircase that goes down into a dimly
lit cellar.
 
 
DAVE
“This had better be good”
 
 
OLD JAMES
(ignoring him)
“Now most people, when they think
of American History, think of the
4th of July, brave patriots
throwing tea out of ships and
cowboys taming a savage land to
make the great country we love
today.”
 
 
DAVE
(indignant)
“Ha! Great country! Trump's taking
my family's healthcare, but Old
James here says it's a great
country!"

OLD JAMES
(still ignoiring him)
“They say history is written by
the victors, but what I have here
is a passage to places and times
that history conveniently
forgot..”
GARETH
“A passage..?”

 
 
The three reach the end of the long stairway and James puts
on some gloves and looks around the dimly lit cellar,
turning things upside down looking for something..
 
 
Gareth and Dave watch, interested.
 
 
OLD JAMES
“Ahh, here it is..”
 
Old James pulls out an extremely faded, torn, yellowed,
dirtied and what looks to be bloodied American flag. He
holds it with his gloves.
 
 
DAVE
“We stopped the show and creeped
down into a cellar to see an old
man’s flag?!?”
 
 
Gareth is about to touch it.
 
 
OLD JAMES
“Careful now young blood, this
ain’t no ordinary flag. This is
the oldest surviving American
flag.”
 

6.
Old James takes a beat and looks right at Gareth.
 
OLD JAMES (CONT'D)
“And it holds ancient magic.”
 
 
Gareth is awed.
 
 
DAVE
“Ok, I’m going back up. I didn’t
get out of bed today to listen to
some old man tell stories about a
flea market flag in a basement..”
 
 
OLD JAMES
“You’re free to go.”
(Pauses a beat)
“But you’ll be missing out on the
adventure of a lifetime.”
 
 
Dave, walking towards the stairs
 
DAVE
(waving his arms around)
“I think this is enough adventure
for me today, I’m going back to
reality.”
 
 
GARETH
(To Old James)
“What do you mean Old James?”
 
 
OLD JAMES
“This flag has the power to
transport the holder to other
times and places in American
history.”
 
 
GARETH
“Whoooaaaa.”

DAVE
“You’ve gotta be..
(interupts himself)
Can it transport me back upstairs
so we can get on with the show?”
OLD JAMES
“It could, but wouldn’t you rather
participate in the American
Revolution?”

 
 
At that Old James takes off his glove, slowly, finger by
finger and motions for Gareth to grab a book called
“American Revolution” on a table.
 
Gareth grabs the book.
 
OLD JAMES (CONT'D)
“So here's how it works. When we
touch our bare skin to this flag
and hold a book about America,
we’ll be transported there.”
 
 
GARETH
“HELL YES!!”
 
Dave is coming back.
 
 
OLD JAMES
(in a secretive tone)
“But, there is one important
difference between this and the
movies. With this flag, wherever
you go, whatever time you're in,
you won't be a spectator, you'll
be a participant. In order for you
to view the history, you have to
become the history.”
 
 
GARETH
“Who will we be?”

OLD JAMES
“The only way to find out is to go
in.. But I warn you, you won’t
always be one of the good guys,
you may not like who you have to
be…”

 
 
Gareth thinks about it a second..
 
GARETH
(Looks at Dave.)
“I’m in.”
 
 
DAVE
“Alright, if we can be done with
this nonsense and get back
upstairs, fire away.”
 
 
Old James places the flag on the table and the book on top
of that, he then motions for all three of them to put their
hands on the flag at the same time.
 
They all do and are quickly transported away - leaving
nothing but a cloud of smoke in the cellar.
 
END ACT 1
 
BEGIN ACT 2
 
The 2nd Act of the movie is Dave, Gareth and Old James time
traveling through the insanity that is American History.
 
Dave and Gareth play different characters from history and
Old James slips in and out when convenient.
 
At one point, it is revealed that Old James was called
Slick Jimmy in the 60's for his ability to smooth talk his
way in and out of tight situations. It is also revealed
that he was a part of the Black Panther movement with Fred
Hampton but bounced after Hampton's assassination.
