A Message from the DDW Council Chair
To my colleagues,
Digestive Disease Week® (DDW) is the premier event in our field that is well-known around the world. But what
makes it a gold standard event besides months of planning? You — the attendees, presenters, exhibitors — are
what make this event thrive. Thank you for being here at DDW 2016 and welcome to San Diego!
“Catch the next wave in science and medicine” is a fitting tagline this year. Not only will you discover new
research and cutting-edge medical advances, but you also get to experience the next generation of the meeting
itself. Year to year, the DDW Council makes it a goal to see how DDW can be improved. There are so many new
enhancements this year, it’s hard to list them all. But I would be remiss if I didn’t mention at least a few.
1. The biggest change you might notice is the elimination of a printed Agenda Book. This piece alone uses 4.2
million pages each year, equivalent to 8,250 reams of paper. By excluding it, we reduce DDW’s impact on
the environment by saving 251,652 lbs. of CO2. More than half the size of the book, you will receive a smaller
Schedule-at-a-Glance in your attendee bag that lists important general information and sessions by day.
In lieu of the Agenda Book, the DDW Mobile Planner is your go-to resource to view all sessions, abstracts,
posters and exhibits information. Fifteen new DDW Tracks have been introduced to allow attendees to search
by topic or theme across all societies. They are tagged within in the app and can be used to create your
personal itinerary for the meeting. Visit the DDW Mobile Planner kiosks located throughout the convention
center, or download it from the Apple App Store or Google Play to your mobile device.
2. Trainees and young GIs should stop by their new dedicated lounge in the Sails Pavilion to network with peers,
collaborate and grab a cup of coffee.
3. All four sponsoring societies contributed to new basic science programming on each day of the meeting
(search the Basic Science Track). DDW also awarded 20 inaugural Basic Science Travel Awards and will host a
Basic Science Reception on Saturday, May 21 at 5:30 p.m.
Hosting the meeting again in San Diego isn’t just a coincidence. The San Diego Convention Center lends itself
to a successful meeting and is in the heart of an iconic city. When you have a moment in between sessions or
roaming the Poster and Exhibit Halls, I highly recommend taking a break on the back terrace overlooking the
harbor. It’s a view that’s hard to beat!
New connections and new opportunities await. Again, thank you for making this the best GI meeting in the world.
