EVENT OVERVIEW &

SUMMARY
WHY SHOULD YOU PARTICIPATE?

A UNIQUE COMPETITION:
LEARNING WHILE COMPETING
Two elements make this competition unique: the
theme and the learning component. Waterloo is
regarded as the “Silicon Valley of the North” as many
leading and growing companies such as Google,
BlackBerry and Shopify are located here. We are
uniquely placed to deliver a competition that will
focus on a key driver of change– technology. The
cases won’t require technology know-how; they will
require understanding of companies working in the
technology industry and/or the opportunities, threats
and business tools that technology is generating.
Examples of case issues are: technology companies
seeking recommendations on growth or other
strategic objectives, or non-technology companies
that want you to recommend technology tools (for
example, ecommerce strategies). The learning will
take place on the second day of the competition, so
delegates can learn before competing. Sponsors, case
subjects and guest speakers will share information
on how technology is affecting them, their industries
and their strategies. You will also learn about
technology tools such as omnichannel that can be
harnessed to achieve business objectives.

2

Why should you participate? The best international
competition teams have experience and insightful
knowledge of a) the latest tools that can be
harnessed to create innovative recommendations,
as well as b) understanding of how industries and
competitive dynamics are changing. Participating in
our competition in October will therefore give you
the edge in subsequent competitions. In addition,
you will have the opportunity to network with some
of the leading and most interesting companies in the
technology industry, explore the Silicon Valley of the
North, visit one of the seven wonders of the world
(Niagara Falls), and perhaps even spend some time
walking around the top of the CN Tower in Toronto.
We will deliver on the work hard, play hard motto
that defines Lazaridis and WLU.
