Social Art Film is one of a number of directions that has emerged in the wake of Social
Art Summit (www.socialartsummit.com).
Social Art Film Weekender is a proposal by Out.Side.Film (www.outsidefilm.org.uk), for
artists working around social practice and artists’ film/moving image to come together in
Sheffield, on the weekend of 28/29 September 2019, to explore practice together by sharing
work, ideas, and food.
It is based on the premise that, within socially engaged practice, there is a sub-set of
practitioners working in the moving image, for whom a similar but distinct set of questions
exist. Some of those questions might be:
-

Can filmmaking be truly collaborative? Can it be an egalitarian process?
Is filmmaking a good way to practice social engagement within contemporary art
practice?
What difference is there between what I do and the work of a committed
documentary filmmaker?
If the process is the ‘art’, how is the process evidenced in the resulting film?
What place is there for the work I make outside of the project itself? Where can I
screen it?
Does anybody else out there wrestle with these questions?

There will be many other questions and we want to open up a space to have these
conversations by sharing and progressing how this work sits within a longer tradition. The
event will take place at Foodhall, a social eating space in Sheffield city centre, and will be
unfunded. There is no cost to attend, other than travel and accommodation. It is possible
that we may be able to offer accommodation to some artists on low incomes. There may be
scope for public evening screenings as well as shared daytime screenings and discussion.
Initially we are gauging interest in this activity, so please respond very briefly by Monday
22ndth July by emailing info@outsidefilm.org.uk to register interest in attending and sharing
work. Please include a link to your work. And please share! Thanks!
