Lenny’s Approac Departments What’s Happening Techie Talk On The Rise Culture Clash:Vampire Weekend Showbiz Review p.61 ic On his new album , Lenny accomplishes the seemingly imposs ible goal of sounding virtually live, as if one extraordinarily am bidextrous individual is playin g it all, and all at the same time. “If you turn it up, it becomes like a wa ll of sound coming down on top of you,” Kravitz elaborates. “What I wanted to achiev e was one big sound, a musical collage made up of many parts that all com e together as a wh ole. Of course,” he adds with typica l understatement, “trying to do tha t by yourself ma kes it harder.” Nightlife In the Now h To Life & Mus Lenny Kravitz is a man who is keeping the classic roc Hendrix, Page and k tradition of Lennon alive. He has taken a good deal of flack for his mimicry and sid eburns, but nevertheless enjoys commercial and critical success. Love & Hate: Fanmail p.38 Indie rock meets African tradition with Contra, the sophmore release from the NYC newcomers. Interview By: Ma rk Seliger Written By: Greg Prato Coming To A Town Near You Staff Favorites 8 - Grind_Magazine.com 52 - Grind_Maga zine.com His astonishing feat of self-expre ssion makes it hard to imagine anyone else intruding. With Lenny, Kravitz cre ates a vast aural canvas on which he ren ders a strikingly person al, unfailingly honest and com pletely authentic lyr ical landscape. “It’s abo ut eliminating all exterior distractio ns,” Lenny Kravi tz explains “It’s abo ut making peace with yourself, about bei ng enough. People feel inadequate unl ess they’re valida ted by things like mo ney or status. Bu t, at the end of the day , you have to loo k at yourself in the mir ror and deal with that person.” There may have been other “retro ” rock acts before him, but Lenny Kravitz was one of the first to not be pigeonholed to a single style as he’ s touched upon suc h genres as soul, fun k, reggae, hard roc k, psychedelic, folk , and ballads over the years. Kravitz was a member of the California Bo ys Choir until his tee nage years, when he decided to pursue rock & roll while in high school and under the heavily influence of funk roc ker Prince. Kravi tz’s admiration of the Purple One was so great that he at firs t patterned his sty le and approach dir ectly after Prince and became kno wn as “Romeo Blu e” (complete with blu e contact lenses), but failed to land a rec ording contract.
