Rubitza and Lydia At the beginning of the month, 11 month old Lydia was admitted to the hospital with malnourishment and a blood infection. She stayed for 5 days, mostly in a crowded emergency room, sharing a bed with another baby. Her mom, Rubitza, was constantly by her side to make sure that she had everything she needed and didn’t roll off the bed. Rubitza was frustrated with the situation, confused by the doctors, and sad for her daughter, but she stood by the bed without sleeping or eating, and showed extreme patience and assertiveness throughout the tense situation. I learned so much from her! After being released from the hospital, Rubitza’s friends told her that Lydia needed to see a witch doctor, but fortunately volunteers at El Jordán and the doctor convinced Rubitza that to become healthy again would take time, patience and nutritious food. The return of Lydia’s smile is a sign that her health is improving Since coming home from the hospital, the doctor gave vitamins and milk for Lydia, and a generous person connected to El Jordán took Rubitza on a big shopping trip. We saw Lydia yesterday and she seems much healthier. She was smiley and stronger, and her cheeks looked a little more full. Please continue to pray for this mom and baby. Rubitza has two other kids, ages 2 and 5. She is 23 years old and has an unreliable boyfriend and unreliable income. It’s really difficult to learn to follow and trust God when the old ways are so engrained, and friends who haven’t changed their lives can have a huge negative impact. Rubitza desperately wants to raise her children in a safe home. Happy Birthday, Miles! This month, we celebrated Miles’ 4th birthday with our friends. Here he is opening a gift with our family friend, Gina. El Jordán Graduation Winnipeg Fundraiser October is the end of regular classes at El Jordán. Wednesday, October 26th, was the student’s graduation ceremony. The ladies came and got dressed up, with their hair and makeup done. They wore graduation robes and received diplomas for their different classes: crochet, cooking, card-making, Bible study, and others. On October 11th there was a fundraiser in Winnipeg, where items made by the women here were sold. Thanks to everyone who made a purchase, $200 went back to the women who made the items! It was really special to see the pride that comes with receiving a diploma from El Jordán. Then, October 30th was the open house, where the women sell their crafts, people pay to play games, and the cooking class sells lunch. They sold about 240 meals, and despite a rainy day, it sounds like it was a big success! It’s been remarkable over the past couple weeks to see the amount of time the women and their families took to get El Jordán ready for the events – they ironed graduation robes, cleaned, cooked, folded napkins, and much more. The women really do work together as a family, each taking responsibility to help prepare for their big days. Sam & Jess Ehlers sjehlers@avmi.org samandjessehlers.blogspot.com Please pray… For the construction as it is in the final ten percent. The graduating class of 2011 Last, but not Least After nearly five months of biking to and from the immigration office gathering all the necessary paperwork, we finally have our one year visas stamped and signed in our passports. Thanks for all your prayer support! For the women as the summer break approaches, that they will remain firm in their faith. For us, that we would find and take opportunities to continue visiting the people we have met (there is lots to do around the buildings, but we want to keep in contact with people as well).
