The Primus Group, which sells to the Federal Government, purposely located within the Martin City CID boundaries at 13846 Wyandotte 18 months ago, because it is a designated HUBZone. Todd Beteljewski tells us his company will remain in the area for at least 10 years and possibly purchase property in Martin City because of the HUBZone opportunities. See article below. Martin City Designated a HUBZone The Historically Underutilized Business Zone (HUBZone) program established by the Small Business Administration helps small businesses in urban and rural communities gain preferential access to federal procurement opportunities. In the Kansas City metro Martin City and a location in mid-town at 49th St. are designated HUBZones. Page 2 Our designation has been renewed to 2012. These preferences go to small businesses that obtain HUBZone certification in part by employing staff, 35% who must live in a HUBZone. The company must also maintain a "principal office" in one of these specially designated areas. An area receives a HUBZone designation by being a business zone that is ―disadvantaged‖ from low economic activity. The program encourages economic development and employment growth in distressed areas by providing access to more federal contracting opportunities. 5% of all federal spending must be in HUBZones. Additional information about the basics of HUBZone requirements can be found on the SBA web site www.sba.gov on the Understanding the HUBZone Program page. Martin City CID Former Sutherlands Lumber Company - For Sale The Sutherlands Lumber Company at 13500 Holmes Road was built in 1989 on 9.2 acres. The hardware/lumber store comprised of a 32,000 square foot building, ample parking and 4 storage out buildings enjoyed a long run as a thriving retail operation in the heart of Martin City. The store closing with its loss of customers to the area has been a challenge to the Martin City Community District. Anita Bates of Colliers International is the commercial real estate broker working diligently to sell the property for $2,200,000. It is widely believed that the sale of this property would be a huge jump start to the upgrades of 135th St. . Phase I section from Holmes Road to Oak Street. A bustling, new business at the corner of Holmes Road and 135th St. would certainly be just what the doctored ordered to complete the busy intersection which currently has Jack Stack BBQ, Wholehouse Flooring and the Martin City Trade Center. Anita Bates may be reached at 816 - 556 -1123 The Tour de Brew Comes Thru Martin City On May 22nd 120 riders came through Martin City as participants in the Tour de Brew Bicycle Tour. They started at 8:00 a.m. in the West Bottoms and worked their way south arriving in Martin City round 10:00 a.m. served. MCBC owner Matt Moore opened his doors to the bikers for a rest stop and a sample of the MCBC brews. The Martin City CID hosted a water stop just east of the new Martin City Brewing Company where bottled water and M&M snacks were We are looking forward to hosting a stop for the 2012 ride next May. July 2011 All the riders said the Martin City water stop was the BEST! Our Mission Statement: The mission of the Martin City Community Improvement District is to serve as an economic development tool that allows landowners in the District to coordinate efforts to improve the District and meet District purposes through master planning that implements public improvements in infrastructure, transportation, and appearance; policies of safety and security; marketing campaigns to attract new business and tourism; and programs that foster recreational and cultural activity as well as special events . MC-CID is governed by a Board of Directors made up of seven property owners who serve four-year terms. The Board meetings are open to the public and held the second Thursday monthly at Jess & Jim’s Steakhouse (517 E. 135th St.) from 8:30 —10:00 a.m. Hardees's (Martin City) breakfast is served. Everyone is encouraged to attend as many Board meetings as possible to keep up to date on the District goals, activities, achievements and to give your input. The Reeds are Gone! As a major part of the Martin City CID Beautification effort for Spring 2011, the CID undertook landscaping the mud-filled, overgrown corner at 135th St. & Holmes in front of Wholehouse Flooring. Not only was it an eyesore to the Martin City customers but posed a danger with a deteriorated sidewalk and a sink hole full of fivefoot reeds. Rosehill Gardens , one of Martin City’s premier landscape companies, spent several days working to create this remarkable transformation. The CID will continue to commit time and money to beautification projects throughout the district. We also depend on each MC owner to keep their property spotless. BEFORE AFTER
