Letter from Bishop Burbidge February 10, 2012 Dear Brother and Sisters in Christ, Each year during the month of February, the Church in our country focuses on our ministry to our brothers and sisters in the African American and Native American Catholic communities through the annual Black and Indian Missions second collection. Our diocesan office of African Ancestry Ministry and Evangelization (AAMEN), which also coordinates ministry to our Native American Catholics, benefits directly from this annual second collection through grants awarded by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Office of Black and Indian Missions. Through this annual grant funding, we have been able to expand upon our ministry with the following important opportunities for Catholic formation: ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ Tuition assistance grants for over 40 children attending Catholic K-12 schools in the Diocese of Raleigh Youth and Young Adults Retreats The annual AAMEN/Native American Catholic Retreat The annual diocesan African Heritage Celebration The Akwe:Kon Native American Pilgrimage The national Tekakwitha Conference for Native American Catholics The National Black Catholic Congress The Martin Luther King, Jr. Christian Unity Celebration The theme for the collection this year on February 19, 2012 is “Faith: Anchored in Jesus, Alive in Mission.” It is through the gift of our Catholic faith that we are all anchored in Our Lord and in Him, renewed in the importance and breath of the mission He has given to His Church. On behalf of our diocesan office of African Ancestry Ministry and Evangelization, I express my gratitude for your past generosity in the annual collection and for your consideration of a renewed gift this year, which will directly assist so many Catholics in the Diocese of Raleigh. May Our Lord Jesus continue to bless you in all your endeavors and may Mary, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, Patroness of the Diocese of Raleigh, watch over you and guide you always. Sincerely in Christ, Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge Bishop of Raleigh AROUND THE DIOCESE ■ Stay up to date with news and information on the Diocese of Raleigh each week by tuning into Catholic Perspective and Catholic Weekly, the Diocesan television and radio programs. Another source of current information is the Diocesan website, www.dioceseofraleigh.org, which contains daily news postings and a calendar of upcoming events. You are also invited to follow the Diocese on Facebook and twitter @raleighdiocese. Stay connected with the Church at your fingertips. ■ Week of February 19, 2012 This week’s editions of Catholic Perspective and Catholic Weekly will feature Bishop Michael F. Burbidge discussing the opportunity the Lenten season provides the faithful to enrich their relationship to Our Lord. The program will also feature Ms. Bea Callery, Diocesan Director of Lay Formation Ministry, explaining the Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion. Sr. Rose Adams, IHM, will offer suggestions on how each of us can use the Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving to enrich our prayer life. ■ What Can YOU do about the HHS MandateThe recent ruling by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services mandating contraceptives and abortifacients be included in all health care plans, even those offered by Catholic institutions is a concern for Catholics. The North Carolina Bishops have joined forces to create Catholic Voice NC, an organization which keeps apprised of legislative matters before the NC General Assembly and the U.S. Congress. When the situation warrants, the Bishops inform Catholic Voice NC participants, via e-mail alert, of an important matter. Participants are often asked to contact their elected representatives to ensure that a Catholic viewpoint is taken into consideration. If you have not already done so, visit www.CatholicVoiceNC.com to link to a letter about the HHS Mandate and send an email to your legislators. This process takes less than five minutes. While you are at the site, sign up for continued alerts from our bishops on matters of interest to Catholic faithful. ■ Marriage – Love and Life In The Divine Plan: Two become one Marriage, this clinging together of husband and wife as one flesh, is based on the fact that man and woman are both different and the same. They are different as male and female, but the same as human persons who are uniquely suited to be partners or helpmates for each other. The difference between man and woman, however, cannot be restricted to their bodies, as if the body could be separated from the rest of the human person. The human person is a union of body and soul as a single being. Man and woman are two different ways of being a human person. Look what the United States Catholic Bishops are saying about marriage: http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/marriage-and-family/marriage/love-and-life/ ■ Attention all High School Youth Don’t miss the 42nd Annual Youth Convention on May 18-20, 2012 at Fort Caswell Coastal Retreat and Conference Center, Oak Island, NC. To register contact your parish youth leader or visit the Diocesan youth ministry website at: http://www.dioceseofraleigh.org/how/youth/
