TURING COLLEGE SC – CAMPAIGNS OFFICER Hi, I’m Chris, a first year History and Politics student, and I’m running to be your next Campaigns Officer. While the work of the Turing Committee over the past year has been fantastic, there is always more that can be done. Below I outline my objectives as your Campaigns Officer. 1. Termly formal dinners Formal dinners are something that have been missing at University of Kent, but I want to change that. One formal dinner a term, open to all Turing students for a small fee would help create a fantastic collegiate spirit. 2. Include second and third year students in Turing life All the events seem to focus on freshers – this is something I want to change. Future years remain Turing students, so why should they not continue to take part in college life? 3. Expand the opening hours of the post room We’ve all been there – we have a parcel delivered at 1pm on a Friday afternoon, and by the time we get the email to collect it, the room is closed. Weekend opening hours are also extremely limited. Other colleges have their post rooms open until 7:30pm – it surely would not be too much of an ask to open the room for an hour in the evenings or at weekends. 4. Campaign for improvements to Hut8 While not a union run business, Hut8 can be an important part of Turing life as it is during freshers week. An alcohol license could help make it as popular as other bars on campus, particularly with its ping pong table and pool tables. There is also a projector which is rarely used – why not open Hut8 up for live sports when they are on? Finally, I would campaign for them to introduce a range of small snack options, which currently are very limited. 5. Replace the path between A and B blocks We’ve all experienced the path on the way to Keynes bus stop, and debated whether to brave it during the slippery winter months. How simple would it be to replace this small stretch with an actual path? 6. Campaign for a new study space for Turing students The common room has received a brilliant overhaul this year, but there is still no study-only areas for Turing students. This would not be an objective which could be achieved immediately, but it seems only fair that Turing begins to catch up with every other college by planning for its own study hub. Why should you vote for me? You’ve heard what I would aim to do in office, but why should you trust me with this role? Quite simply, I enjoy helping others out and am a team-player – I currently volunteer at the Beaney House Library in Canterbury to help those who are computer literate. I’m fully committed to everything I do, whether it be academic or extra-curricular, and look forward to taking on board everything that you as Turing students want to see implemented in our college.
