Embed a PDF in a website or an intranet

Rather than a link that takes people elsewhere, the document appears inside your page. The visitor reads it without leaving your site, and you have no file to host.

01Open the embed code window

In Public sharings, open the share, then click Embed on a website, in the left column under the preview.

02Choose between a fixed height and kept proportions

Two codes are offered, and they do the same thing in two ways.

  • Fixed height: the frame takes all the width available and keeps the height written in the code. That is the choice for an article column, where you know how much room to give the document.
  • Kept proportions: the height follows the width, in a 4 to 3 ratio. Prefer it if your site is read on phones, where the width changes from one device to the next.

03Paste the code into your page

Copy the code, then paste it into your page where the document should appear. In a publishing tool, switch to code mode first, or use the block meant for HTML: on WordPress it is called Custom HTML, elsewhere code or embed.

An intranet works exactly the same way, on one condition: the machines that display the page must be able to reach public.pdf-archive.com. An internal network cut off from the internet will show nothing.

04Adjust the height if the frame is too short

In the fixed height code, the number after height is a height in pixels. Replace 480 with the value that suits your page. Nothing else needs touching.

05Check how it looks on your site

The frame shows the preview of the document, its upload date and the download button. The brand bar and the invitation to create an account are not served inside a frame: your page stays yours.

06Worth knowing

The document stays hosted here

Your page contains only the frame. The file stays in your archive, with its upload date and its view counters. You close the share whenever you want, without touching your site.

To change the document being shown

A share carries a frozen copy. To show another version, publish the new document, then replace the address in the code on your page. If the code must not move, use a QR code, whose destination changes without touching the printed matter.

A password protected share does not display inside a frame

The frame then shows a button that opens the document on its own site. That is deliberate: typing a password into a frame on a page whose origin you cannot check is exactly the habit people are taught not to have.

The frame is not indexed for itself

Search engines index the share page. If you want the document to be findable, see what has to be allowed.

Before embedding the document

An embedded file loads inside the visitor page: making it lighter changes everything. And a page that is sideways or unnumbered shows far more inside a frame than in a reader.
