What the tool actually does
The method has to match
A file encrypted with GnuPG does not open with OpenSSL, and the other way round. If the passphrase is right and nothing happens, the method is usually the reason. The file extension is the clue: .gpg or .pgp on one side, .enc on the other.
A wrong passphrase says nothing useful
The tool cannot tell you that you are close, because it does not know what the right answer looks like either. It simply fails. That is a property of the encryption.
Nothing is stored, in either direction
The encrypted file, the passphrase and the file that comes out all go with the job when it is erased. Nothing is kept to make a second attempt faster.

Which encryption is supported?
AES-256, through GnuPG or through OpenSSL.
Which method should I pick?
The one the file was encrypted with. A .gpg or .pgp file came from GnuPG, a .enc file from OpenSSL.
I have the passphrase but it fails, why?
Usually the method is wrong. Try the other one. If it still fails, the file may be damaged.
Can you open a file without the passphrase?
No. That is the whole point of encrypting it, and it holds for us as much as for anyone else.

Are my files kept?
No. The encrypted file, the passphrase and the file produced are all deleted once the job is done.
Where are my files processed?
