Three situations it was made for
A transfer that was cut off
A download or a copy interrupted midway leaves a file whose index is missing. That index is exactly what repair recomputes.
A file rescued from a failing disk
Data rescue often returns files whose beginning survived and whose end did not. Repair salvages the pages that are still intact.
A document your reader refuses
Some PDF files are written loosely enough that one reader accepts them and another does not. Rebuilding them makes them readable everywhere.
What the tool actually does
What repair actually does
A PDF ends with a table that says where each page starts. When that table is missing or wrong, the file stops opening even though the pages themselves are intact. Repair walks the file, finds the objects that are still readable, and writes a fresh table around them. That is why a file can go from unreadable to perfectly normal without a single page having changed.
Nothing is invented
What has really been lost stays lost. If a chunk of the file is gone, the pages it held cannot come back, and the tool will not draw a blank page in their place. You get what could be recovered, and you can see for yourself what that is.
An encrypted file is another matter
A PDF that asks for a password is not damaged: it is locked. Use the password removal tool instead, with the password you already hold.
Before you upload anything
Will my file definitely be recovered?
Not always, and it depends on how much of it survives. Repair rebuilds what is still readable. If the damage reaches the content itself, that part cannot come back.
Is the original modified?
No. You upload a copy, and you get a new file back. The document on your machine is untouched.
Does repair change the pages?
No. The pages are copied as they are. Only the internal structure around them is rewritten.
My PDF asks for a password, is it damaged?
No, it is encrypted. That calls for another tool: password removal, which needs the password you already have.
Is the tool free?
